Students on the ‘Early Years Education’ degree programme have written stories for and with pre-school and primary school children as part of the ‘Creative Writing’ practical project. These are now available as audio files on the university’s website. A competition is also encouraging the children to get involved.
Students have created enchanting and creative Christmas and winter stories under the guidance of lecturer Renate Schmitz-Gebel as part of the ‘Creative Writing’ practical project. From now on, pre-school and primary school children can listen to these stories via the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences website. “Especially during this time of Covid-19 restrictions, it’s great for children – and, incidentally, for parents too – to listen to exciting, surprising or touching stories. What makes them special is that these stories cannot be found in any book, as they were written by the students themselves,” says Schmitz-Gebel.
After children have listened to one or more stories, they can watch the concluding video message from Schmitz-Gebel. In it, they are invited to get involved: “We’d like to encourage the children to come up with their own stories and tell or write them for us. They’re also welcome to draw something based on the stories they’ve heard and express their creativity that way – or perhaps they have ideas of their own. Children are warmly invited to send us their ideas.” It’s well worth taking part – five children will be chosen at random from all entries to explore the campus next year with Schmitz-Gebel and her students, accompanied by an adult. During the visit, they will get to know the KLEX creative learning workshop, where they will take part in their own session in the creative writing workshop. A specific date will be announced as soon as possible, given the current situation.
