On 28 June 2013, the big day will finally arrive – when the ‘River Shark’ team dives underwater in Washington in their self-built submarine and competes against teams from all over the world.
Washington – here we come!
Fourteen students from the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, led by Prof. William Megill, are building a human-powered submersible: As the only German team, they intend to take part in the international submarine race in Washington on 28 June 2013, organised by the Foundation for Underwater Research and Education (FURE) at the Naval Surface Warfare Centre, Caderock Division.
In a race covering 100 metres at a depth of 6 metres, the HSRW Submarine Team will have to hold its own against competitors from all over the world. A bionic propulsion mechanism is a prerequisite for participation. The River Sharks’ ‘fins’ are modelled on those of the fan-tailed sailfish, which is known for its ability to swim at exceptionally high speeds (from 40 to 59 knots [approx. 75–110 km/h]).
