Kleve District – Kleve – He had spread himself out across no fewer than four tables, looking downright imposing. His arms were crossed over his chest, and a wide belt made of marzipan drew the eye away from his sad, wide eyes. As if he’d sensed it – his final three hours must have arrived. Right down to the very last slice, the members of the Friends of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences – Cleve Campus e.V., the lecturers and, above all, the many HRW students had ‘polished off’ the oversized Weckmann shortly before the evening news.
“We hadn’t expected so many guests at our inaugural event,” said Peter Wack, chairman of the Campus Cleve Friends’ Association, expressing his gratitude as he welcomed the evening’s guests. And the President of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Professor Dr Marie-Louise Klotz, described the lavish Christmas tree present and the get-together – with the scent of mulled wine, hot chocolate and the Christmas-scented Weckmann – as “yet another brilliant idea from our Friends’ Association”. More than a hundred guests certainly made life difficult for the poor chap standing in the dim light of the canteen. And master baker and confectioner Walter Heicks – who had become the youngest member of the Friends and Supporters just a few days earlier – promised those present that he would enter the date ‘2014’ into his diary that very evening.
As the Chair of Campus Cleve put it: “Today marks the beginning of a long tradition. I can promise you all that.”
