Guided tours, workshops, crash courses and an insight into the university: on 3 June 2023, the Faculty of Communication and Environment’s Open Day attracted numerous prospective students and curious visitors to the campus in Kamp-Lintfort.
There, visitors had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes, find out about the degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Communication and Environment, take part in guided tours of lecture theatres, computer rooms and laboratories, carry out exciting experiments, and chat with lecturers and students.
Many prospective students took the opportunity to find out in detail about the study options at the university and to put their questions directly to the professors of the individual degree programmes, who were available for discussions throughout the day. This gave them a good insight into the practical aspects of the individual degree programmes and their innovative research and student projects.
The Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Environment, Prof. Dr Klaus Hegemann, emphasised: “The Faculty of Communication and Environment is very pleased with the response. On the day, we were not only able to provide insights into our research but also to engage in conversation with prospective students. The atmosphere on the Kamp-Lintfort campus is truly special, and the wide range of degree programmes on offer is a source of great enthusiasm.”
Particularly popular were, amongst other things, the interaction with the robot Pepper – who knew a great deal about the university and even performed a short dance – and the ageing simulation, where participants felt as though they had aged by 20 years overnight thanks to heavy wrist cuffs, blurred vision and impaired hearing. Visitors also learnt about 3D printing and laser cutters in the FabLab, as well as topics such as IT security, the perception of advertising and brands, online public services, radio astronomy, programming, game development and renewable energy. The activities on offer at the Green FabLab, such as the ‘banana piano’ and drone flights, were also very well received. In addition to the faculty’s programme, the Central Student Advisory Service, the University Music and Sports Departments, staff from the library, the Equality Office, the AStA and the Fair Trade Student Group were also present on site.
All visitors were delighted by the university’s international yet friendly atmosphere. Performances by the university band, a Latin dance workshop and, last but not least, the glorious sunshine also contributed to the great atmosphere.
