On Tuesday 19 February 2013, the Year 9 Technology class from the Karl Kisters Realschule in Kleve visited the Faculty of Technology and Bionics at the Kleve campus of the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 26 February 2013: The Faculty of Technology and Bionics at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, in cooperation with the zdi Centre in the District of Kleve, cleverMINT, once again introduced around 30 school pupils and their teachers, Mr Boßmann and Ms Kahl, to the ‘secrets’ of mechatronics engineering this year.
In a taster lecture delivered by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Nissing, Professor of Control Engineering – who himself attended secondary school in Kleve – the pupils were introduced to the innovative technology of automated parking.
The lecture was delivered in English to emphasise the importance of this foreign language in their future careers. At the same time, the aim was to help the pupils overcome any fear of the language: It proved a success, as the pupils confirmed afterwards that understanding the language posed no obstacle, and that the meaning of unfamiliar terms could be grasped through the use of images, diagrams and formulae. Afterwards, the pupils were given an insight into the fascinating world of bionics.
Everyone involved is convinced of the benefits of such career- and study-oriented initiatives: “An event that was interesting for all participants. We hope to have helped the pupils in their career choices,” concludes Prof. Nissing.
There are plans to hold this event annually and to expand it further. With the new campus in Kleve, pupils will also have the opportunity to take part in practical laboratory exercises.
