For her Bachelor’s thesis in the Work and Organisational Psychology programme, graduate Jana Benning was awarded first prize in the ‘Research Posters’ category.
Every year, InSiM hosts the largest German-language, interdisciplinary and multi-professional simulation symposium in the field of medicine. This medical congress, which covers all medical disciplines, is aimed at all professional groups involved in simulation in medicine. The congress is organised by the Institute for Patient Safety and Team Training (InPASS).
At this year’s InSiM, Jana Benning, a graduate of the Psychology programme (Industrial and Organisational Psychology) at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, presented the findings of her bachelor’s thesis on the implementation and effectiveness of Crew Resource Management (CRM) in medicine. For this, she was awarded first prize in the ‘Scientific Posters’ category. CRM is a team training programme designed to prevent human error. This training concept, which was originally developed in the aviation industry to improve flight safety, is now also used in medicine to enhance patient safety.
The thesis addressed the following three research questions: How is CRM currently implemented in the medical sector in German-speaking countries? How effective are medical CRM training programmes at present in German-speaking countries? How will CRM develop in the future in German-speaking countries? The graduate summarised the study’s description, its key findings, implications for practice and an evaluation of the study in an informative and instructive poster presentation.
“With her thesis, Jana Benning has made an important contribution to research into error prevention. This enables us to better understand how human errors can be avoided in the operating theatre,” emphasises Professor Dr Nicki Marquardt, Professor of Work and Organisational Psychology, who supervised the thesis. Professor Marquardt is also the project leader of the ‘CRM in Medicine’ research project, within the framework of which Benning wrote her bachelor’s thesis.
