Thanks to the commitment of businesses and private individuals in the Lower Rhine region, high-achieving students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences will once again be able to receive a Germany Scholarship in the 2019/2020 academic year.
At the scholarship dinner, the three support associations, together with Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, express their gratitude for the commitment of the scholarship donors, whose support benefits a total of 86 students. In addition to the financial aspect, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences and the support associations attach particular importance to strengthening the ties between the sponsors and their scholarship holders, who represent potential future talent for the region.
Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen, President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and Vice-President Prof. Dr Tatiana Zimenkova welcomed those present. “The Deutschlandstipendium is mutually beneficial. It broadens curricular and extracurricular opportunities whilst also providing access to the scholarship holders’ knowledge. Every single scholarship opens up opportunities for the students and the region,” emphasised Locker-Grütjen. “Through their support, the sponsors are investing in the future of the students, the university and society,” Locker-Grütjen continued, expressing his thanks to the scholarship providers.
This year, the students received their certificates from the sponsors themselves, providing the first opportunity for everyone to get to know one another. At the festive buffet that followed, attended by representatives from the regional business community, there was an opportunity to discuss studies, career aspirations and professional ambitions, as well as to strengthen links with the companies. On behalf of the three supporting associations, Stefan Finke, Monika Geenen and Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Kaudelka also expressed their sincere thanks to the scholarship sponsors and emphasised how important the commitment of the local business community is for the students.
The Germany Scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic performance, regardless of their parents’ income. Scholarship holders receive 300 euros per month for one year. To fund this, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences raises half of the funding from private sponsors, companies or institutions. The other half is covered by the federal government. In total, €127,800 was donated by private scholarship providers for the 2019/2020 funding period. Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences can therefore distribute €255,600 in scholarship funds to 86 of its best students.
In addition to financial support, the scholarship offers non-material support through an accompanying programme, from which, in the view of the regional business community, all parties benefit greatly. On the one hand, this helps to counteract the shortage of skilled workers in the region; on the other hand, it gives students the chance to prove themselves in the labour market.
