The topic of Europe is also a major focus during Kamp Abbey’s anniversary year and is now set to be discussed on Europe Day in a panel discussion organised by the town of Kamp-Lintfort and taking place on the university campus.
“We are delighted that Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is taking part in the programme to mark the 900th anniversary of Kamp Abbey. 900 years ago, the abbey was founded by Cistercian monks from what is now France, and served as the starting point for the establishment of many other abbeys in Germany and its neighbouring countries. This network can be seen as the beginning of the European ideal. It is therefore important to us to explore this theme during our anniversary year,” explains Mayor Prof. Dr Christoph Landscheidt.
The title chosen for the event is ‘Quo Vadis Europa – Where are you heading, Europe?’. Various European topics will be discussed with the panellists, as well as with the audience. The focus will be particularly on current issues such as the climate crisis and environmental policy, the war in Ukraine, as well as the EU’s economic architecture and the impact of the pandemic and inflation on it.
Former Federal Minister Dr Barbara Hendricks has been confirmed as a panellist. In addition, Prof. Dr Torsten Niechoj and Prof. Dr Jakob Lempp from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences will take part in the discussion. Two students from the university, Antonia Paaßen and Katerina Moorehead, will complete the panel. The event will be moderated by André Fritz from Radio KW. University President Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen and Mayor Prof. Dr Christoph Landscheidt will welcome the participants to the university on 9 May.
“Our young university is the ideal venue for this event: here, we discuss today’s challenges and explore the possibilities of tomorrow – for the region, for Europe, but also beyond. Networking and exchange are central to this. I am therefore delighted that, in May, we can provide a platform for everyone interested in current European issues,” said Dr Locker-Grütjen.
The panel discussion will take place on 9 May at 5 pm in Lecture Theatre 4 at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Kamp-Lintfort. The discussion will be accompanied by music. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for discussion in the foyer, with refreshments provided. The event is open to all visitors and free of charge.
