The collaborative production ‘Codex Atlanticus’ by choreographer Max Bilitza, featuring students from the university as well as artists from North Rhine-Westphalia and abroad, will be performed as part of the ‘ExtraSchicht’ event on 30 June 2018.
This sensory and abstract performance – combining music, dance and visual art, and featuring students from the Digital Media and Media and Communication Informatics degree programmes – transports the audience into fascinating worlds that lie at the intersection of art and science. Inspired by the Codex Atlanticus – arguably the most significant collection of Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches, studies and drawings – Duisburg-based theatre producer Max Bilitza creates a panorama in which the methods of choreography, media informatics, sound art and cutting-edge digital technology merge to form a captivating new theatrical language. In doing so, Bilitza draws on da Vinci’s creative power and inventive spirit, interpreting him as a prophet of the industrial age. In conjunction with the function and history of the blower hall complex at the former steelworks in Duisburg-Meiderich, a pitch-black, futuristic, dreamlike spatial artwork is created as part of the 18th Night of Industrial Culture. The ensemble is accompanied by live percussion music performed by the group Repercussion, including pieces by Steve Reich and Nebojša Jovan Živković.
The performance begins on 30 June 2018 at 7.00 pm, 8.30 pm, 10.30 pm and midnight in the theatre hall of the Gebläsehalle in the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park (Emscherstraße 71, 47137 Duisburg). Each performance lasts 20 minutes.
