"What might a perfect campus look like?" asked the Student Council of the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, and Baris Ertemli (on the left in the picture, with Karthick Onnu from the Student Council), an industrial engineering student, came up with the best answer. He won the Shark Tank event, organised by the faculty’s student representatives, with his ideas for a study café. Find out more about his idea.
To develop his idea, Baris Ertemli carried out a survey amongst friends who are studying in Turkey, where study cafés can be found in all universities. “Turkey has a deep-rooted tradition when it comes to campus life, and my research reflects this. Based on the data I’ve gathered, it’s clear that study cafés are widely used by students, and I strongly support this trend. However, our campus and the surrounding area lack a dedicated café where students can meet informally, collaborate on projects or study – either alone or in groups. Whilst the library offers a quiet environment, it is often too silent, and the study rooms are frequently occupied. On the other hand, the canteen tends to be noisy and distracting, making it unsuitable for focused work. As a result, students do not have an ideal space for casual study,” he said, describing his idea for study cafés.
Another idea presented at the event was a bridge connecting the canteen to the halls of residence on the other side of the Spoy Canal. In the end, the jury – comprising Karthick Onnu from the FSR, research staff member Frank Kremer and Prof. Dr Neil Shirtcliffe – opted for the study café.
