The 2018 Wednesday Academy is entering its second round: a total of four events are planned until the end of December. The series kicks off with the lecture ‘Opinion polling, its pitfalls and what can be done about them’ on 24 October 2018.
Under the theme ‘From regional to global – the economy and society in today’s world’, the Wednesday Academy programme explores fascinating topics and places them within a multifaceted context. Contemporary issues are presented clearly by speakers from academia and the professional world, examined from a theoretical perspective and discussed in a large group setting.
The second part of the lecture series begins in October. Professor Dr Oliver Serfling, Professor of Economic Policy and Development Economics, will kick off this series. In his lecture, ‘Opinion Polling, its Errors and What Can Be Done About Them’, he addresses the fact that, in light of Trump’s victory in the US or the AfD’s performance in the last federal election, it appears that opinion pollsters are increasingly getting their predictions wrong. Using statistical data, he will examine whether forecasts are actually becoming less accurate and, if so, why this is the case. He will also demonstrate how recent trends in online survey research can address the problems faced by traditional polling organisations, whilst also highlighting their limitations.
The lecture will take place on 24 October 2018 at 6.00 pm on the Kleve Campus, Marie-Curie-Straße 1, in Building 2, Room 02 01 017 (Seminar Room 5).
