Unfortunately, we have to cancel this year’s MINT Girls’ Summer School. But we’ve already got plenty of new plans for schoolgirls and anyone else who’s interested, and we look forward to welcoming you to other events and, without a doubt, to next year’s MINT Girls’ Summer School!
Programming a microprocessor, experimenting with everyday chemicals in the kitchen and building a bionic fly’s eye – schoolgirls aged 16 and over can discover all these technical and scientific experiments, programmes and techniques, and much more, at the MINT Girls’ Summer School at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. From 26 to 30 July 2021, the Faculty of Technology and Bionics invites you to the first virtual edition of the summer school. To ensure that participants can get hands-on and try things out for themselves – in keeping with the spirit of a university of applied sciences – they will be sent a STEM kit in advance containing all the necessary materials. Under the guidance of professors and staff from the faculty, they will learn, amongst other things, how nature serves as a model for technical innovations, build working Stirling engines, programme a microprocessor and also discover how 3D printing works. The teaching modules build on one another: first, they tackle simple programming; later, they apply this knowledge to robotics. In addition, the participants learn how to film, edit and present their own experiments and projects clearly using a smartphone.
The schoolgirls are not left to their own devices in front of the screen: two female students from the faculty accompany the participants virtually, provide support with the various topics and kick off each morning’s activities together. Physical activity is also catered for, with the university’s health and safety team offering an active break. The central student advisory service holds a group discussion to help participants determine which degree programme best suits their interests. This year’s MINT Girls’ Summer School is being organised by the faculty’s Equal Opportunities Officer, Dr Alina Leson, and a team comprising a professor and staff members.
