The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in August with a series of events in the state capital and across the state. The district of Kleve is also congratulating ‘NRW’ on its birthday and, to mark the occasion, will be illuminating a large section of the façade of the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in the state colours of ‘green, white and red’ during the week of celebrations.
Numerous notable buildings and landmarks across the country will be illuminated for a week as part of similar initiatives. “The district of Kleve has particularly close ties with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia through our Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences,” explains District Administrator Silke Gorißen, explaining the choice of location for the initiative. “As the developer, the District of Kleve handed over the Kleve Campus to the State of North Rhine-Westphalia nine years ago.” The state-wide anniversary campaign organised by the districts and independent towns also gives residents in the district a new ‘image’ of the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. From Monday 23 August up to and including Monday 30 August 2021, the state colours will be displayed on the façade of the administration building.
A symbolic candle on the NRW anniversary cake
During the planning stage at the end of July, University President Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen quickly gave his “approval” for this lighting project. “We are delighted that Kleve District has thought of our university to mark the state’s anniversary. We are happy to be part of it.” During the evening test run, it quickly became clear that the white façade elements are well suited to the illumination. In addition, the university will lower the flexible sun blinds in the evening to enlarge the projection surface. District Administrator Silke Gorißen: “I would like to thank the President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences for the smooth cooperation. Together, we are, so to speak, symbolically ‘lighting a candle on the birthday cake of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia’ on the university’s façade.”
