Creative ideas and solutions were the order of the day at the hackathon held at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences: the 15 participants spent a day experimenting with paper fibre-water suspensions to find out how paper production could be optimised.
Organised by Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with Biokon and Voith, the event focused on finding the best solution to a problem that arises during paper production, whereby adhesive residues in the paper fibre-water suspension can settle on the surface of the paper machines. Once these deposits reach a certain size, they can lead to paper web breaks. So how can such deposits be prevented? The participants tested various ideas and techniques relating to superhydrophobicity; the most promising of these is now being tested internally by the plant manufacturer and, if successful, will be developed further.
Hackathons are development events where creative solutions to problems can be devised and tested on-site in an initial trial. At Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, hackathons on various topics are held regularly in collaboration with companies and other research institutions.
