At this year’s IEEE SMC 2018 research conference, the Brain-Computer Interface research group led by Professor Dr.-Ing. Ivan Volosyak was awarded the Best Paper Award for the paper they submitted.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which operates globally, regularly organises a research conference on the topic of ‘Systems, Man & Cybernetics (SMC)’. This international organisation of specialists and experts in electrical and electronic engineering is known, amongst other things, as the world’s largest professional association for its standardisation of technologies, hardware and software. Participants may submit written papers on their own scientific work in advance of the conference. If a paper is accepted for the conference, it is presented in person.
This year, the conference took place in Japan. The Brain-Computer Interface research group led by Professor Dr.-Ing. Ivan Volosyak, Professor of Biomedicine and Engineering, together with research assistants Aya Rezeika, Felix Gembler, Piotr Stawicki, Abdul Saboor, Mihaly Benda and Roland Grichnik, submitted their paper entitled “A Dictionary-Driven Mental Typewriter Based on Code-Modulated Visual Evoked Potentials (cVEP)”. For this, the team was honoured with the highest accolade, the Franklin V. Taylor Memorial Award, in the ‘Best Paper and Oral Presentation’ category. A total of 1,291 papers from 55 countries had been submitted. Only 741 submissions from 44 countries were accepted for publication in the journal – from which a shortlist of five finalists was then selected, who were required to present their work again to a jury. The jury ultimately decided on the winner based on the paper and the presentation. “We are particularly delighted to receive this award. It is wonderful to see that our research is gaining international recognition and that our work is paying off in this respect too,” said Professor Volosyak, commenting on the team’s success.
