Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences uses only paper bearing the Blue Angel label, making it one of the most recycling-paper-friendly universities in Germany. Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences shares seventh place in the 2018 Papieratlas University Competition with the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
In cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the Federal Environment Agency and the German Association of Universities and Colleges, the Pro Recyclingpapier initiative has been organising the university competition for the past three years. Universities with more than 5,000 students can take part by reporting their paper consumption and recycled paper usage rates. The results are published in the Papieratlas. This year, 42 universities took part, setting a new record with an average recycled paper rate of 68.78 per cent.
Using recycled paper bearing the Blue Angel label is a particularly simple and effective measure for climate and resource protection. Compared with paper made from virgin fibre, its production saves around 70 per cent water and 60 per cent energy. By using recycled paper in 2017, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences thus saved more than 379,000 litres of water and over 78,000 kilowatt-hours of energy.
