Gaurang Khot, a former student and PhD candidate at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, has recently successfully defended his doctoral thesis. For his thesis on ‘Chemical Imaging of Neural Communication’, he was officially awarded a PhD by the partner university, Radboud University in Nijmegen.
Gaurang Khot, a former student and PhD candidate at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, has recently successfully defended his doctoral thesis. For his thesis on ‘Chemical Imaging of Neural Communication’, he was officially awarded a PhD by the partner university, Radboud University in Nijmegen. He is the first student to have earned this title in collaboration with the neighbouring Dutch university. He was supervised by Neil Shirtcliffe, Professor of Bionics specialising in biomimetic materials at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, and by Prof. Tansu Celikel from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at Radboud University.
Born in India, he studied biotechnology at bachelor’s and master’s level at the University of Mumbai and completed his second master’s degree in bionics at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. In his research, he developed electrodes for measuring the hormones dopamine and serotonin. The carbon-based electrodes are capable of detecting these important hormones without, for example, being influenced by other substances present in the spinal cord. They could be used as implants to detect biogenic amines.
The partnership with the neighbouring Dutch university has been in place for several years and enables students from both institutions to spend an exchange semester at the other university and, after completing their Master’s degree, to pursue a PhD by writing a thesis.
