Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences will participate as a partner in the new ‘Science Without Borders’ programme run by the Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Technology. An agreement to this effect was signed today in Bonn by Dr Heide Naderer, President of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, together with the Ethiopian Minister for Science, Dr Getahun Mekuria.
The programme facilitates study and research stays in Germany for Ethiopian Master’s and PhD students. The aim is to provide them with the relevant qualifications, particularly in the fields of engineering and life sciences/agricultural sciences, so that, upon their return to their home country, they can play an active role in shaping Ethiopia’s future development. This is to be achieved through joint doctoral projects, in which Ethiopian students will work alongside young German researchers. The cooperation partners in Ethiopia are Adama Science and Technology University and Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. German universities are also involved in the programme.
“We are delighted to have this opportunity to become more actively involved in cooperation with partners in East Africa,” says Dr Heide Naderer. The region is one of the key regional focuses of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences’ ongoing internationalisation efforts. In this context, a delegation comprising the President, deans and staff from the International Centre had already travelled to Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya in early September to visit various higher education institutions and hold initial discussions with the Ministry of Science.
