Meltem Kalayci is the lucky winner of the student competition to design a logo for the town of Kamp-Lintfort’s bid to host the State Horticultural Show. In collaboration with RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH, the town council had organised the competition within the Information and Communication Design degree programme at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
Alongside the slogan ‘Discover. Explore. Experience’, her design features four stylised plants whose flowers and leaves are composed of geometric shapes. Through this playful, idiosyncratic design language, the student makes subtle references to the city and its historical transformation: the slender form of the plants and the geometric shapes of the flowers evoke associations with mining culture. The viewer may be reminded of a conveyor wheel or a winding tower. At the same time, the design’s abstraction and systematic approach allude to science and, by extension, to the university. The interplay between the plants’ delicate playfulness and geometric form draws a parallel with Kamp Abbey and evokes memories of the Baroque terraced garden with its symmetry.
“The logo is fresh and modern, giving the bid a distinctive identity,” emphasised Mayor Prof. Dr Christoph Landscheidt, Hermann Timmerhaus, project manager at RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH, and Prof. Michael Pichler from the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, who together formed the jury. All three praised Kalayci’s successful execution of this challenging task. It was particularly important to Landscheidt to involve the university in the State Garden Show application. “We want to inspire everyone in Kamp-Lintfort with our enthusiasm: from nursery school children to pensioners, and from former miners to students,” said the mayor.
From now on, the logo will form an integral part of the visual identity of Kamp-Lintfort’s bid and will feature on various products and printed materials. Meltem Kalayci will receive 1,000 euros in prize money for her winning design. The other prize-winners are Julian Peschel (2nd place) and Martin Hoffmann (3rd place).
