It’s now official: the State Garden Show is coming to Kleve in 2029! On Friday morning, Silke Gorißen, the Minister for Agriculture and Consumer Protection for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, announced the decision at a press conference held in the council chamber of Kleve Town Hall. In reaching her decision, the Minister has followed the recommendation of an independent evaluation committee, which visited Kleve last week: “The town of Kleve won over the independent evaluation committee with its ‘Town – Countryside – Water’ concept and will host the State Garden Show in 2029 – my warmest congratulations!”
Kleve’s mayor, Wolfgang Gebing, welcomed the Minister to Kleve Town Hall and emphasised how hosting the 2029 State Garden Show will have a lasting impact on Kleve: “By hosting the State Garden Show, we in Kleve will create something that will endure and adapt our hometown to the challenges of the future. Under the motto ‘City – Countryside – Water’, we aim not only to enhance the city centre, the Spoy Canal and the Kermisdahl, but also to create idyllic gardens in the Galleien that highlight the unique topography of the city of Kleve and explore the future of agriculture. In Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, we have a strong partner at our side for these tasks, one that has also consistently provided us with active support throughout the application process.”
Since last year, the City of Kleve has been working on the concept for hosting the 2029 State Garden Show. After months of hard work, Mayor Gebing thanked everyone who had been involved in the process: “I would like to thank Minister Gorißen and the evaluation committee for the trust they have placed in us. I would particularly like to thank my colleagues here at the town hall and at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, who have supported the entire process over the past few months with unwavering dedication and great passion. From the initial project outlines right through to concrete planning and the actual application process, the idea of a State Garden Show in Kleve could only take shape thanks to the outstanding work of these individuals. Thanks to this well-coordinated team, in five years’ time we will be able to present the public with a picturesque LAGA 2029 in Kleve!”
Until recently, the town of Steinfurt near Münster was also in the running alongside the town of Kleve to host the 2029 State Garden Show. Both towns were visited last week by a commission of experts, who assessed the potential sites for a State Garden Show on site.
