On Wednesday 13 April 2016, a panel discussion followed by a Q&A session with the artist Max Knippert and the war photographer Ursula Meissner will take place in the lecture theatre complex on the Kleve campus as part of the ‘Blackbox’ production.
War, displacement and the destruction of culture have been a constant feature for millennia. Since last year, the refugee crisis has brought these issues into sharper focus and made them more relevant than ever before.
The renowned photojournalist Ursula Meissner has been travelling to war zones and crisis areas around the world for 25 years now. Through her powerful photographs, she gives a face to the victims of armed conflicts and humanitarian disasters. Together with the artist Max Knippert, Ursula Meissner has created a memorial – the ‘Blackbox’ – on the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, which draws the viewer in and removes any sense of distance. Through her images, captured in the midst of real life, Ursula Meissner moves the viewer and thereby reveals the hardship endured by people living in war and crisis zones.
From now on, interested visitors can view the ‘Blackbox’ at the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences at any time of day. On 13 April, Ursula Meissner and Max Knippert will discuss their impressions and experiences, using the Blackbox to bring war and displacement together through art and photography.
The event will be moderated by Prof. Dr Alexander Brand, Professor of Political Science specialising in International Relations at the Faculty of Society and Economy. Following the panel discussion, a group tour of the ‘Blackbox’ on campus is planned.
The event is free of charge for members of the public who are interested. No registration is required.
