Students on the Digital Media degree programme at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences are presenting their project work at the Kamp-Lintfort Municipal Library as part of the ‘Bubble Wall’ exhibition.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 22 April 2016: The hustle and bustle of our modern world is becoming an increasing burden for people. The library is one of the few public urban spaces that can offer a respite from this restlessness. Yet visitors often bring their stress with them into the library. It takes quite a while for the library’s atmosphere to rub off on the visitors.
The Bubble Wall is designed to help visitors relax and ‘settle in’ emotionally.
The Bubble Wall consists of an elastic fabric stretched across an aluminium frame. A projection causes bubbles to float across the wall. When the fabric is touched – by gently pricking it with a finger – the Bubble Wall reacts. New bubbles appear, the shape of which depends primarily on the duration of the touch. The carefully selected colour scheme, special sounds and the gentle movement of the bubbles support the playful relaxation process.
The Bubble Wall is one of several interactive installations created as part of a module on the Digital Media Master’s programme under the guidance of Prof. Ido Iurgel, Professor of Media Informatics at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The students Elvira Kalinowski, Saskia Rühmkorf, Christian Spieß and Alicia van der Zwaag were supported in the development of the Bubble Wall by the Bochum-based media artist Wolfram Lakaszus, who, as artist-in-residence at Lokal Harmonie (Duisburg-Ruhrort), collaborated with Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences on the ‘Stadt Land Fluss Kultur II’ project.
The Bubble Wall can be viewed at the Kamp-Lintfort Municipal Library from 25 to 30 April during normal opening hours.
