Why did you choose the QUSH degree programme at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences?
I chose the university because it offered me the opportunity to continue my studies whilst working. At the time, I was already working as a laboratory assistant at Bakery&Food GmbH in Sevelen. The university impressed me with its forward-looking and innovative approach and offers a wide range of modern study options, which have always inspired me through their public profile.
After doing a bit of research to choose my degree programme, I realised that the QUSH programme prepares students for a variety of professional roles, as QUSH graduates are often specifically sought after in the job market. These insights meant that the decision to choose this programme was both quick and easy, as the degree opens up numerous career paths, enabling a flexible and promising professional future.
What was the topic of your bachelor’s thesis?
The topic of my bachelor’s thesis is: “NIR spectroscopy as an alternative testing method for determining the water activity of feed samples at Mera Tiernahrung GmbH with the aim of process optimisation”.
What happened next in your career after graduation?
I was employed in quality management at Mera during my studies. The QUSH programme provided me with a wide range of skills that impressed my employer even whilst I was still studying.
What skills did you acquire through your studies that you can now put to good use in your job?
Through my studies, I gained in-depth knowledge in the areas of quality assurance and quality management, process optimisation, as well as analytical and methodological skills. I now successfully apply these skills in my job to ensure the quality and safety of products and processes. I use the skills I acquired in the areas of environmental protection, sustainability, occupational safety, auditing and hygiene on a daily basis, which is particularly valuable during site inspections. I have also learnt to scrutinise work processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
What advice would you give to current or future students?
My advice would be to actively participate in excursions (including international ones), projects and work placements, to remain curious and to continually seek out exciting and valuable further training opportunities offered by HSRW. As Albert Einstein said: “The difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary is that little extra”. Make the most of every opportunity to develop yourself and have the courage to break new ground.
