Shaping a sustainable world
Learn how engineers can tackle the challenges of climate change and resource scarcity. The Engineering for Sustainability degree programme equips you with the tools to think and act sustainably – using technology that makes a real difference!
How is the programme structured?
In this degree programme, we are fully committed to project-based learning. You’ll start right from the first semester with several small projects to get to know this specific way of learning and studying, and you’ll be closely supported by your mentor. Our focus is on mechanical engineering, but always with sustainability in mind.
You won’t find traditional lectures and seminars on this Degree programme. Instead, we focus on individual learning pathways and support you in building on your strengths and developing further skills. You’ll spend your time both working in teams in our labs, so you can put what you’ve learnt in theory straight into practice, and studying independently, so you can really delve deep into topics.
As your studies progress, the projects will become more complex and challenging. You can choose for yourself which specialist skills you wish to acquire, allowing you to become either an expert in a particular field or a generalist.
You can view the course structure here; in the Module guide on the right in the download area, you will find descriptions of the possible projects.

- It doesn’t get any more practical than this: right from the start, you’ll work on real-world challenges in a project-based setting. Block modules and self-directed learning allow you to tailor your course of study to your individual needs.
- From breadth to depth: Learn more than just traditional engineering! Understand technical interrelationships and how sustainability can be implemented from the very start. The focus is on topics from mechanical engineering, but always with a view to sustainability.
- Methodological competence: We teach you all the skills you need to find effective and sustainable solutions, not only during your studies but also when facing new challenges in your career. With us, you’ll develop your own personalised skills profile!
- Intercultural competence: You will study in English and, together with your fellow students, learn to communicate and collaborate within international teams.
- Close support from lecturers: In this degree programme, the teaching staff take on the role of mentors and learning guides; they aim not only to support you throughout your studies, but also to inspire you, spark your creativity and, of course, assist you with their specialist knowledge and expertise.
