On 15 December, students from Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences hosted a ‘get-together’ in the canteen. Together with refugee families, they celebrated the festive season there over hot chocolate and gingerbread.
Since the beginning of December, students from the university group ‘Refugee Support HSRW’ have been collecting shoeboxes, which were filled with toys for children by other students, lecturers, staff and residents of Kleve and the surrounding area. The shoeboxes, beautifully wrapped, were dropped off at numerous collection points in Kleve, such as the Meda Kitchen Centre and the Wohnzimmer.
In a beautifully decorated canteen, the students welcomed their guests to spend a cosy evening with the families and make new friends. The university president, Dr Heide Naderer, opened the festive evening with a speech thanking the students and warmly welcoming the families. Naturally, this was accompanied by an Arabic translation. Following the opening, the children received their presents. The children’s sparkling eyes and beaming faces made the evening a great success.
In total, the students collected 200 shoeboxes. The remaining boxes were passed on to other organisations and refugee accommodation centres.
