On Wednesday, 20 November 2024, the University Electoral Assembly of Rhein-Waal University re-elected the current President, Prof. Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen, for a second term of office. His current term of office runs until 31 May 2025; the President has now been confirmed in office for a further six years, until 2031.
With this re-election, the university is sending a clear signal of continuity and the successful path of consolidation. “I would like to express my sincere thanks for the trust placed in me. I see this re-election as an expression of appreciation for my work to date and recognition of my achievements, but also as an incentive. As set out in our university development plan, the key objectives for the coming years include greater integration into the region, alongside the expansion of national and international collaborations, increasing the diversity of the student body, and promoting the concept of sustainability. “I look forward to working constructively with all members of the university to shape its future,” said Locker-Grütjen.
The University Electoral Assembly is responsible for electing all members of the Executive Board. Half of its members are drawn from the Senate, and the other half from the University Council. The sixth meeting of the University Electoral Assembly of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences began at 3.00 pm in the Audimax on the Kleve campus. The meeting was open to the university community.
About the individual
Prof. Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen holds a degree in environmental science and was awarded his doctorate in 2012 with a thesis on the framework conditions for research at German universities. Before taking up his post as President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in June 2019, he worked for 20 years at the University of GH Essen and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). In April 2023, he was awarded an honorary professorship in ecology, specialising in sustainability transformation through participation, at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS). The professorship is affiliated with the Centre for Responsibility and Ethics (ZEV), a key research institution at the university. A native of Duisburg, he is married and has three children.
