Students on the Master’s programme in ‘Health Sciences and Management’ at the Faculty of Life Sciences invite all interested members of the public, students and university staff to a themed evening entitled ‘Addiction – the many faces of dependence’ on Tuesday 4 July 2017 at 7.00 pm in the Lecture Theatre Centre (Building 1, Room 01, Ground Floor 004) on the Kleve campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
Whether it is alcohol dependence, drugs or non-substance-related addictions, such as internet addiction: the consequences of addiction place a heavy burden on those affected and also on their families. The mental health problems and physical harm resulting from addiction often lead to a decline in social and professional standing, unemployment and relationship problems. Among young people, addiction very often leads to a sharp decline in academic performance and withdrawal from their circle of friends.
As part of this themed evening, the students aim to provide information and raise awareness about addictions such as alcohol dependence, drug addiction and internet addiction. This will be followed by a discussion addressing questions such as ‘How can I recognise the signs of addictive behaviour in myself or a family member?’ or ‘What preventive measures can be taken to avoid addiction?’.
This event format was developed by the students as a problem-based learning project as part of their degree programme, under the supervision of Prof. Dr Robert Renner, Professor of Health Promotion and Nutrition, and Heike Holtappel, research assistant at the Faculty of Life Sciences.
