28 students from the Faculty of Life Sciences at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the ‘DHB – Netzwerk Haushalt’ and the ‘Forum Waschen’, are organising a campaign day on 23 June 2015 from 3 pm to 6 pm on the topic of ‘sustainable (Laundry) on the Kleve campus.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 18 June 2015: Does a dishwasher use more water than washing up by hand? Do dirty clothes come out just as clean in a wash tub as they do in a washing machine? How should dirty laundry be sorted properly? Or how is eco-friendly washing powder made? These and other fascinating topics will be explored through the use of illustrative information materials, information stands and hands-on activities. The focus is on sharing and imparting knowledge about washing, dishwashing and cleaning in the context of sustainable development. Visitors to the event can look forward to an exciting and varied programme centred on the theme of ‘washing’. Sharing experiences with students from the Faculty of Life Sciences, professors and other experts is designed to motivate visitors in an engaging way to adopt a sustainable approach to washing up.
In the foyer of the lecture theatre centre, students will give presentations on a wide variety of topics in different groups. A transparent dishwasher offers an insight into the washing processes and shows visitors just how clean plates and cups become compared to washing them by hand. In a ‘black box’, the sense of touch is put to the test. Can you identify dishwasher tablets or bars of soap by touch alone? How do these cleaning products feel? A quiz tests visitors’ knowledge of washing and dishwashing. The top quiz participants can look forward to small prizes. The history of washing is brought to life through items of clothing. The garments are hung on a washing line and also serve as a guide to sorting laundry correctly. Visitors to the event are also invited to get involved. A black light test reveals whether your own clothes or hands are clean, and whether the correct washing techniques are being used.
The ‘Sustainable Washing’ event is organised by students from the Bachelor’s degree programmes in ‘Bio Science and Health’ and ‘Quality, Environment, Safety and Hygiene’, under the supervision of Prof. Dr Dirk Bockmühl, Professor of Hygiene and Microbiology at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the ‘DHB – Netzwerk Haushalt’ and the ‘Forum Waschen’.
