Thanks to the commitment of regional businesses, organisations and foundations, high-achieving students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) will once again be able to receive a Germany Scholarship in the 2023/24 academic year.
Thanks to the commitment of regional businesses, associations and foundations, high-achieving students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) will once again be able to receive a Germany Scholarship in the 2023/24 academic year. A total of 55 students were delighted to receive these scholarships on this occasion. To thank the scholarship providers for their support, the university’s three support associations, together with HSRW, hosted a scholarship dinner on 26 October 2023 at the elaya Hotel in Kleve.
In addition to the financial aspect, it is particularly important to the university and the support associations to strengthen the ties between the sponsors and their scholarship holders, who represent potential future talent for the region. Prof. Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen was delighted by the large turnout and expressed his gratitude to the scholarship providers: “Every single scholarship supports the students and enables the university and regional businesses to establish contact with HSRW students – with these young talents,” said the university president.
Julia Nepicks welcomed those present on behalf of the Hochschule Rhein-Waal e.V. Friends’ Association c/o IHK Niederrhein: “My research has shown that we are returning to the place where it all began in 2011. It was here at the elaya Hotel that we held our first scholarship dinner back in 2011.” The managing director of the Friends’ Association also emphasised that the decision to award a Germany Scholarship is not only a business decision, but always a personal one as well. “It is important to support young talent; they are an asset to our region,” Nepicks continued.
The Friends of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences – Cleve Campus e.V. has been involved from the very beginning. Wilfried Röth, a board member of Sparkasse Rhein-Maas, recalled that the Friends’ Association was founded before the university even existed. “At the start, there was just one dream: if there were ever to be a university in our region, we would actively support it. Because it was clear to us that a university would bring enormous added value to the region. Today, the university thrives on the quality of its students, and it is a great pleasure for us to recognise the best students. They can count on our support,” said Röth.
Bernhard Sack, Managing Director of impacx services GmbH, was singled out for his exceptional commitment: “You are the first entrepreneur to have successfully secured another sponsor for the Germany Scholarship yourself,” emphasised University President Locker-Grütjen. In his response, the Managing Director made it clear that the idea had arisen to encourage other companies from the region to get involved in the Germany Scholarship scheme as sponsors. “It is important that, particularly in times of economic instability and numerous political conflicts, we set an example and support young people on their career paths. We are delighted that, for the fifth year running as part of the Germany Scholarship programme, we are not only providing financial support to young, committed international students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, but are also engaging in intercultural exchange with future professionals, learning from one another and, as a regional company, fostering our connection with the university”, explains Bernhard Sack.
The event took place in a festive atmosphere at the elaya Hotel Kleve. Together with representatives from the regional business community and members of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the scholarship recipients were able to discuss their studies, career aspirations and professional ambitions, and forge links with the companies.

Information on the
Germany Scholarship The Germany Scholarship supports students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences who have already achieved outstanding academic results or who are expected to achieve particularly good academic performance. In addition to academic performance and previous academic record, social commitment, a willingness to take on responsibility and special social, family or personal circumstances are taken into account. Scholarship recipients receive a monthly grant of €300.00 for one year. Half of the funding is raised by the university from private sponsors, whilst the other half is provided by the federal government. Students of all nationalities and from all disciplines are eligible to apply. They must be enrolled at the university or intend to enrol in the following semester. Applications for the Deutschlandstipendium are submitted via an online portal every May. This financial support enables scholarship holders to focus more fully on their studies. In addition to financial support, the programme emphasises non-material values. An accompanying programme offers workshops on a wide variety of topics, a scholarship network and contacts within the regional business community. Interaction with sponsors provides opportunities for industry-related dissertations and other projects.
