At the inaugural meeting of the Senate of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. habil. Gregor van der Beek was elected as the new Chair. The Senate members present elected Mia Parker, a fourth-semester student, as Deputy Chair.
The inaugural meeting took place on 30 March 2022 in the Audimax on the Kleve campus. Both were unanimously elected by the voting members of the Senate present and expressed their gratitude for the trust placed in them. Professor Peter Kisters thanked everyone “who stood for election. “We look forward to working together over the next two years,” said the Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer.
The newly elected Chair of the Senate, Prof. Dr. habil. Gregor van der Beek, has been Professor of Economics, specialising in Finance, at the Faculty of Society and Economics since the 2012/13 winter semester. The economist completed his PhD and habilitation at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He spent several years as a visiting professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the USA, whilst further stays took him to the University of Koblenz and the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. He has also held a wide variety of teaching posts, including in the Netherlands, Austria and Germany. Research, teaching and workshop assignments have taken him to Serbia – on behalf of the EU – as well as to China, Italy and, on numerous occasions, to the USA. His research and teaching focus particularly on the European Union, public finances in developing and emerging economies, the economic evaluation of public revenue and expenditure programmes, and health economics.
Mia Parker, an International Relations student, was elected as deputy chair. She has been a member of the Student Council for the Faculty of Society and Economics for over a year, has been involved since May 2021 as a member of the Commission for the Improvement of Quality in Studies and Teaching, and has served for a year as head of the Political Education Department within the General Students’ Committee (AStA).
