The German-Dutch cooperation project ‘Krachtige Kernen/Starke Dörfer’ (KRAKE) is organising a festival in Grieth am Rhein on 6 October 2018, starting at 11.30 am. Anyone interested is invited to come along to find out more and have a chat.
Experts from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Münster University of Applied Sciences, Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences (HAN), as well as the Borken District Craftsmen’s Association and the Münster Chamber of Crafts, will work with participants in workshops to explore various topics and issues in depth. From small businesses and voluntary work to the identity of the village, and ranging from land-use plans to healthy eating and website design – the programme interactively addresses many of the challenges facing rural areas. In addition, a project fair will provide information on all the activities that have been carried out in the 54 KRAKE pilot villages on both sides of the border. The event also offers an opportunity to exchange experiences. “We see time and again that ideas tailored precisely to each village’s specific situation are not lost when citizens themselves work out what their village community should look like in five, ten or 20 years’ time. For this reason, it is worth staying in touch, even if constructive debate can be labourious, takes time and visions may not be immediately realisable,” emphasises Professor Dr Klaus Hegemann. The Professor of Business Administration at the Faculty of Communication and Environment leads, together with Professor Dr Heike Weinbach, the teams from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in four ‘communities’ of the KRAKE project. “We are convinced that citizens want to volunteer to work towards their own sustainability, and that community spaces in villages with easy access significantly improve this. This has already been achieved in an exemplary manner with the ‘Hanselädchen’ in Grieth.”

The KRAKE project is co-funded under the INTERREG V A Germany-Netherlands programme with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalisation and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the Province of Gelderland.
