The vacant post of President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences will be filled by an acting president with immediate effect. Professor Dr Eberhard Menzel will take on the duties until a successor, elected by the university’s electoral assembly, takes office.
Since September 2018, the duties of the Office of the President at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences have been carried out, initially on an acting basis, by Professor Dr Georg Hauck, Vice-President for Human Resources, Organisational Development and Diversity. The university has now, at its own request, appointed a representative to fulfil the role of President, following a request to the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Professor Dr Eberhard Menzel will carry out the duties of President until a successor, elected by the university’s electoral assembly, takes office. “I see this role as a challenge that I am keen to tackle together with the university community. However, as some processes can be protracted, I am also aware that, given the limited time available to me, there will be instances where I can only set the course,” said Professor Menzel.
Born in Hemslingen in the district of Rotenburg, this native of Lower Saxony studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He began his academic career at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. Professor Menzel brings a wealth of experience to the higher education sector, particularly in university management: he spent a total of 25 years as a professor at various universities, including four years as Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences, three years as Dean of the Department of Electrical Power Engineering, and seven years as Rector. At Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, he served as its founding president for six years. During this time, Professor Menzel gained extensive experience in the transition from the start-up phase to the consolidation phase of a university and the organisational adjustments required for this. Furthermore, Professor Menzel has been Chair of the University Council at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences for 14 years and Chairman of the Board at the Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programmes (AQAS e.V.).
Professor Menzel forms part of the Executive Board of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences alongside the Vice-Presidents Professor Dr Georg Hauck, Professor Dr Jens Gebauer and Vice-President Professor Dr Marion Halfmann, as well as Chancellor Michael Strotkemper.
