Prof. Dr Gerard Meijer is stepping down as a member and chair of the University Council


Prof. Dr Gerard Meijer has announced his resignation, with immediate effect, as a member of the University Council of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and as its Chair.

Prof. Dr Gerard Meijer has announced his resignation, with immediate effect, as a member of the University Council of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences and as its Chair. Professor Meijer informed Dr Thomas Grünewald, State Secretary at the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, of this decision and notified the Executive Board and the University Council accordingly.

The University President, Dr Heide Naderer, and the Chair of the Senate, Prof. Dr Achim Kehrein, noted Professor Meijer’s decision to step down from his post with great regret and thanked him for his extensive and highly dedicated work for the university. Professor Meijer had chaired the University Council of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences since May 2014.

In accordance with Section 5(1) of the Statutes of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the University Council comprises six external and four internal members. In accordance with Section 22(4) of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (HG NRW), a selection committee is now to be formed, comprising two members of the University Council, two members of the Senate and a representative of the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. This committee will then seek a successor to join the University Council for the remainder of Professor Meijer’s term of office. The proposal will then be submitted to the Senate for confirmation and subsequently to the Ministry for approval. The Ministry will then make the appointment.

In addition to the election of a new University Council member, a new Chair of the University Council must be elected. Until the new chairperson is elected, University Council member Prof. Dr Robert Renner, Professor of Health Promotion and Nutrition at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, will act as deputy chair of the University Council. The University Council will hold its next meeting next week.
