STEM workshops for school pupils

Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 25 February 2016: Pupils interested in STEM subjects can now register for a range of new programmes at the zdi Centre in the District of Kleve, known as cleverMINT. These programmes are designed to spark pupils’ interest in the STEM subjects: maths, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

During the upcoming Easter holidays, pupils in Years 8 and 9 will have the opportunity to build a PLC control system at KHS and the Kister Foundation in Kleve. In industry, technical manufacturing processes in machines are often controlled by such electronic control systems (PLC systems). But how are these systems built, and where are they used in industry? The holiday workshop begins on 21 March 2016, from 9 am to 2 pm, with a tour of the premises and a short project to solve a control engineering task at KHS in Kleve. Building on this, a practical course on PLC control will take place from 22 to 24 March 2016, from 9 am to 1 pm, at the Kister Foundation’s premises.

In addition, interested sixth-form girls can gain an initial insight into everyday life at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences through the ‘STEM Mentor Programme’. Female students from STEM degree programmes show the schoolgirls what life and studying are like at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The schoolgirls will accompany their mentors during the summer term to lectures, STEM workshops and other events.
