Dr Joachim van Alst, Head of Anaesthesia at St Willibrord Hospital in Emmerich-Rees, is to be appointed Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences with effect from July 2017.
“With the appointment of Dr Joachim van Alst, the university is gaining a dedicated professional with practical experience to help train our students,” said President Dr Heide Naderer as she presented the certificate of appointment. The Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. Dr Matthias Kleinke, is also delighted: “We are pleased to have him as a lecturer in our faculty, as he is exceptionally well-placed to convey the specialist and interdisciplinary requirements of his subject.”
Since the summer semester of 2011, Dr Joachim van Alst has regularly undertaken teaching duties in the fields of ‘Epidemiology’ and ‘Fire Safety’ at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and has also made significant contributions to the content of other modules. Since then, he has not only earned great respect amongst students and colleagues as a lecturer, but has also gone far beyond his remit to contribute to the further development of the Bachelor’s degree programmes ‘Quality, Environment, Safety and Hygiene, B.Sc.’ and ‘Bio Science and Health, B.Sc.’, as well as the Master’s programme ‘Health Sciences and Management, M.Sc.’ He shares his extensive expertise in the fields of fire safety, civil protection, blood transfusion services, emergency medicine and emergency management with students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences through both theoretical and practical teaching.
Dr Joachim van Alst is passionate about fostering a mutually beneficial partnership between the university and the healthcare sector: “It is important that students are prepared for their careers in the best possible way, with practical, up-to-date knowledge. Safety and quality aspects in the healthcare sector are becoming increasingly important, and I would like to play a part at this crucial juncture in ensuring that graduates of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences receive an interdisciplinary and multifaceted education. The fact that, for example, students have the opportunity to obtain the ‘fire safety assistant’ qualification as part of the ‘Fire Safety’ module, in cooperation with VDS Schadensverhütung GmbH, is an early result of this interdisciplinary approach. We are already working on further aspects of the programme.”
