54 HSRW lecturers were nominated by students, with four of them ultimately meeting the nomination criterion of receiving at least five student votes. This year’s jury comprised Prof. Dr Tobina Brinker, Managing Director of the Network for Continuing Education in University Didactics and visiting lecturer at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Birte Heidkamp-Kergel, Head of the E-Learning Centre at HSRW, Kristina Kähler, Officer for General Higher Education Didactics at Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, and Minsika Weerasooriya from the Student Council of the Faculty of Life Sciences.
The award went to Dr Daniel H. Scheible, Professor of Business Administration and Intercultural Competence at the Faculty of Communication and Environment at HSRW in Kamp-Lintfort. He impressed the panel with his diverse range of assessment options, which are aligned with his teaching objectives; he also combines different assessment formats or, for example, offers students a choice of two out of three topics covered in the course during written examinations, thereby allowing students flexibility, including in their own assessment of the quality of their knowledge. “Our students are a very diverse group – with varied experiences of knowledge transfer and assessment in school settings, hailing from more than 120 nations. We must address this reality. The teaching staff at the university do so with complete conviction, in order to provide all students with the best possible support for their academic success. In particular, the nominees for the Teaching Award stand out for their well-thought-out teaching and assessment concepts and know how to assume the appropriate role as a knowledge transmitter, adviser or learning facilitator in different situations,” emphasises Prof. Dr Jörg Petri, Vice-President for Studies, Teaching and Academic Continuing Education at HSRW. Prof. Dr Daniel H. Scheible has now been honoured for this approach with the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences Teaching Award, which was presented in December 2023 at the Kamp-Lintfort campus.
About the Teaching Award at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences
By awarding the Teaching Prize, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences demonstrates the high priority it places on the quality of teaching within the institution and recognises the commitment of its teaching staff. The Teaching Prize is awarded under a theme that changes annually and carries a prize of 10,000 euros.
Any member of the academic staff, as well as all research assistants and lecturers on special assignments, who taught at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences during the winter semester 2022/23 and the 2023 summer semester at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and, during this period, have fostered interaction between students and/or between learners and teachers within their teaching and have incorporated this in an innovative way into their teaching approach. A six-member jury will decide on the nominations submitted. In 2023, the Teaching Award was presented for the twelfth time.
