In Kleve, a special partnership has been forged between the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW), the General Students’ Committee (AStA), the City of Kleve and Kleve’s cultural community: In future, HSRW students will pay a flat rate of no more than five euros for most cultural events in Kleve.
Culture tickets for students have long been the norm in major cities. In Kleve, however, access to the cultural scene has so far been somewhat more difficult for students, despite the discounts already available. The primary aim of a culture ticket for students is to provide easier and more affordable access to the local cultural scene.
What makes the scheme in Kleve special is that the event organisers themselves support students by further reducing the student-discounted prices to achieve the desired flat rate of five euros. Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen, President of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, thanks everyone involved in the cultural sector, the City of Kleve, the initiators at the university and the AStA for making this ticket possible.
Sara Khaffaf-Roenspieß, Head of the Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB), the Welcome Centre, University Sports and Music, is also delighted that the ‘5-euro culture ticket’ is being launched: “Given students’ financial circumstances, this ticket is a great opportunity for them to get involved. This is particularly true at a university like HSRW, where more than 50 per cent of students are international,” says the Head of the ZSB.
Christian Schoofs, Head of the Student Affairs Department, agrees: “In the past, we’ve found that cultural activities are incredibly important for student integration. They provide a point of reference for international students to experience cultural diversity here on campus. From this semester onwards, we hope this will really come to life. The ‘5-euro culture ticket’ is a huge help in this regard.”
After all, students do have a keen interest in music, poetry slams and other events. “Some students aren’t even aware of the cultural offerings available in Kleve, so this will soon give them affordable access to them,” emphasises Charlotte Winkler, chair of the AStA.
Dr Oliver Locker-Grütjen adds, “Gaining an insight into the local cultural scene also encourages students to contribute their own cultural background and thus actively foster exchange within an international environment here in the region.”
The ‘5-euro culture ticket’ will be available to all students in Kleve from the start of the 2022/23 winter semester on 19 September 2022 when purchasing event tickets, upon presentation of their student ID card.
