The fire safety officer and students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences jointly organised the first Health and Safety Day at the university’s Kleve campus. A day dedicated to promoting social and mental wellbeing.

Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 24 July 2015: “Step by step towards health and safety” – under this motto, a group of six students from the Bachelor’s degree programme in “Quality, Environment, Safety and Hygiene”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Schumachers, Professor of Integrated Management Systems, Quality, Environment and Safety at the Faculty of Life Sciences, together with Heinz Lippe, the fire safety officer at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, organised the first Health and Safety Day on the Kleve campus. With the support of local companies and partners, the aim was to analyse and actively promote the social and mental wellbeing of both students and staff at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.

Protecting people – our most important resource – through prevention

The Health and Safety Day began with a welcome address by the President of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Dr Heide Naderer, followed by an opening lecture on ‘Mental stress in the workplace’ by Prof. Dr Nele Wild-Wall, Professor of Research Methods and Diagnostics in Psychology at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. With topics such as ‘Workplace stress’, ‘CO₂ levels – room temperature and ventilation’, ‘ergonomic workplace design’ and ‘the psychology of the spine’, visitors were given a comprehensive overview of the various aspects of health promotion and social and mental wellbeing as part of the event.

Participants were able to play an active part in the Health Day through various health checks, such as an eye test, a hand grip strength test, a screening test to measure blood sugar levels, or a body stability test. “The Health and Safety Day was a great success. In addition to the numerous information stands and the opportunity to find out about the sports facilities at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the fire-fighting training with the Kleve Volunteer Fire Brigade and the first-aid training involving the use of a defibrillator with the Malteser Hilfsdienst, the registration campaign run by the German Bone Marrow Donor Registry (DKMS) was a great success. A great many staff members registered,” says Heinz Lippe, fire safety officer at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, with delight.
