Earning not just one, but two Master’s degrees – this is made possible by the joint cooperation agreement between universities in Spain and Germany. Given the overlap in subject matter between the two degree programmes, the dual degree has been designed so that the overall duration of the programme is one semester longer, with the final two semesters being completed at the respective partner university abroad.
The programme’s first graduate, Julia de los Ángeles Cerezo Martínez, successfully defended her dissertation in September. In her dissertation, she focuses on aquaponics, combining strawberry cultivation with tilapia farming. Aquaponics is a method that combines hydroponics and aquaculture, representing an integrated and sustainable system for growing vegetables and producing fish. In hydroponics, on the other hand, plants are grown without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in an aqueous solvent as a substitute. “I wanted to do the dual Master’s degree to have better work and research opportunities abroad and to learn a third language,” explains Julia de los Ángeles Cerezo Martínez.
Prof. Dr Matthias Kleinke supervised the thesis alongside his Spanish colleague and was present at the defence in Cartagena: “Our experience so far has been very positive, and we would like to invite even more students from Cartagena to our university to take part in this dual Master’s programme.” Kleinke is confident that there are also students at HSRW who are interested in studying in Cartagena, not only because of the pleasant climate, but also because of the excellent research opportunities.
