Students on the ‘Information and Communication Design’ degree programme designed illustrations for the exterior wall of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 28 January 2015: As part of a semester-long project, ten students on the ‘Information and Communication Design’ course at the Faculty of Communication and Environment created a range of illustrations on the theme of ‘electric mobility’ for the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).
The JRC is establishing a new laboratory dedicated to electric mobility at its site in Ispra, Italy. Visitors to the new facility should be able to see at a glance what research is being carried out in the building. For example, the laboratory is used to measure vehicles, test batteries, inspect charging stations and develop new standards for charging and payment. To highlight the research priorities to the outside world, the students created various designs for the JRC buildings, such as a windmill, a light bulb or a pictorial representation of a solar charging station.
“It is very important for the students to see how their illustrations look when scaled up to an unusually large size – such as that of a building wall. It is only by transferring them to a large surface that the true impact of the work becomes apparent,” explains Prof. Jörg Petri, Professor of Media Production at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. To this end, the students first took part in an illustration workshop led by the artists Meike Staats from Hamburg and Rumi Banecke from Düsseldorf, where they learnt how to transfer their illustrations on the theme of ‘electric mobility’ onto a large wall of a vacant commercial building in Kamp-Lintfort.
On 4 February 2015, the students will present their creations on the Kamp-Lintfort campus. A jury comprising Darren McGarry, Head of Public Relations and Communications at the JRC; Dr Alois Krasenbrink of the Sustainable Transport Unit, a research institute of the European Commission; and Dipl. Des. Christian Stindl will select the winner. The winning design will then be applied to the external wall of the JRC in Italy once the new buildings have been completed.
The JRC is a research organisation of the European Commission and comprises seven research institutes in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Germany. Through its research and scientific and technical expertise, this European Commission body supports decision-making processes at European level.
