Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 30 April 2014: To mark the upcoming European elections, Federal President Joachim Gauck will visit the town of Kleve and Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences on Tuesday, 13 May 2014. Living in Germany, working in the Netherlands – or vice versa: the German-Dutch border region shows how Europe can grow closer together! In the town of Kleve and the surrounding towns and parishes, this is already a reality and can serve as an example for Europe. On this topic, the Federal President will hold a ‘Library Talk’ at around 10.45 am at the Museum Kurhaus with Mayor Theodor Brauer (City of Kleve), Mayor Günter Steins (Municipality of Kranenburg), Mayor Hubert Bruls (City of Nijmegen, Netherlands), Sjaak Kamps (Managing Director of Euregio), Ulrich Francken (Chair of the Euregio Council) and Minister Angelica Schwall-Düren (Federal Affairs, Europe and Media).
This will be followed (at around 11.30 am) by a reception with residents of the town of Kleve, hosted by Mayor Theodor Brauer. During this event, the Federal President will sign the Golden Book of the town of Kleve and deliver an address.
At around 11.50 am, the Federal President, together with Mayor Theodor Brauer and Minister Angelica Schwall-Düren, will take a stroll from the fish market along Große Straße, mingling with members of the public as they go.
At 1.30 pm, the Federal President will be welcomed in the main lecture theatre by 450 students from all faculties, representing numerous different nations, as well as by the Chair of the General Students’ Committee, the Executive Board and the deans of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. As part of a panel discussion, the Federal President will discuss ‘Europe’ with six students from the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. He is particularly interested in the international students’ external perspective on the European Union. Journalist and WDR presenter Dr Jan Philipp Burgard, personal adviser to WDR Director-General Tom Buhrow, will chair the panel discussion.
At 2.25 pm, the Federal President will leave the town of Kleve.
