Julian Peschel, a graduate of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Information and Communication Design, is one of the five finalists in the Newcomer category of the 2021 German Design Awards.
The German Design Council’s Newcomer Award supports young designers who have attracted attention through their exceptional achievements and creative talent. Candidates are nominated by representatives of universities or by the German Design Council itself. An international jury then selects five finalists from among all the nominees, each of whom receives prize money of 2,500 euros. In addition to international publicity, the award offers numerous opportunities to network with renowned figures from the design industry.
After graduating from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Julian Peschel studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven. His work is characterised by a strong passion for narrative visuality and is based primarily on data available online, with a focus on satellite data. He often takes a critical look at political and economic conditions and (in)structures at the same time. His bachelor’s thesis, ‘Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust’ – supervised by Michael Pichler, Professor of Communication Design at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences – already explored the theme of volcanism and was inspired by the aesthetics of satellite imagery. His Master’s thesis, ‘Modes of Perception’, explores satellite data as a valuable source of information for scientific purposes and as a political and military tool.
