This year’s Wednesday Academy is being held under the theme ‘775 Years of Kleve – a series of lectures to mark the anniversary year’. Kicking off the series, just in time for the town’s anniversary, are Kleve-based artist Max Knippert and Prof. Dr Alexander Brand, Professor of Political Science specialising in International Relations at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, with their lecture ‘Image or Urban Identity – University Town or Provincial Town?’.
On 25 April 2017, the town of Kleve will celebrate its 775th anniversary. This event forms part of a year of celebrations in which Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is taking part. This year’s programme for the Wednesday Academy at the Faculty of Society and Economics therefore combines current developments in the town with lectures on its history. “As a faculty based in Kleve, we have chosen a local overarching theme this year. The topics will be explored and discussed from an academic perspective throughout the lecture series. In this way, we aim to integrate the Faculty of Society and Economics at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences even more closely with the town of Kleve,” explains Prof. Dr Thomas Pitz, Professor of Economics specialising in game theory and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Society and Economics. Alongside academics from the faculty, external speakers have been invited to deliver and discuss thematically focused lectures on the town on the Lower Rhine.
These include economic topics relating to the town of Kleve, such as ‘From an elephant to a centipede – the economic structural transformation that has taken place in Kleve’, as well as historical topics discussed in the context of tourism, such as ‘History and sights around the city of Kleve’. Furthermore, Prof. Dr Jakob Lempp will present the latest findings on the ‘rounding-off’ practice in Kleve, which has been the subject of media debate. This year’s Wednesday Academy will also provide a platform for current student projects in the field of gender equality work.
Through this lecture series, the Faculty of Society and Economics at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences aims to encourage students, lecturers and, above all, the interested public to reflect together on local issues.
