Information for prospective HSRW students

Information for prospective students affected by the War in Ukraine

The information you’ll find here is intended to help you find our support offers, course programme, admission requirements, application procedure and further support services here at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences to help you make HSRW your academic home.

Students from Ukraine with Ukrainian citizenship

Ukrainian students who are enrolled at a university in Ukraine and seeking temporary refuge in Germany can apply for a residency permit in accordance with § 24 of the Residency Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz) after registering with a town/city and the local immigration office.

As the lecture period of summer semester began on 21 March 2022 and the application deadline has already passed, it is no longer possible to enrol for summer semester 2022. However, we are developing a programme specifically for Ukrainian students that will allow them to bridge the gap until winter semester 2022-23, for example via intensive language courses (see below). The application period for the winter semester will start in May 2022.

Students enrolled in Ukraine from other countries

Students who are enrolled at a university in Ukraine, but who are not Ukrainian citizens themselves, are generally not entitled to residency in Germany. These students are entitled to transit visas in Germany so that they can more easily return to their home countries. (Exceptions are only possible if they qualify for refugee status due to conditions in their home country.) Nevertheless, this group of students – as with all prospective students – are also more than welcome to apply in May 2022 to secure a spot at HSRW for winter semester 2022-2023.

How do I apply to study at HSRW?

As a refugee, the same conditions apply to you as to other international students when applying to study at a German university. Rhine-Waal University cooperates closely with the association uni-assist for international students who have earned their school leaving or academic certificates outside of Germany. Please find detailed information on how to apply at these locations:

How do I know if my school certificates make me eligible to study at HSRW?

Whether you meet the minimum admission requirements depends on your academic qualifications. Please find further information on admission requirements for prospective students with refugee status here. You can also do a first check if you meet the criteria here at uni-assist.

What can I do if I couldn’t bring all my academic certificates?

In case you are not able to submit relevant educational certificates due to your asylum situation and the circumstances of your arrival in Germany, uni-assist can verify whether you can study at a German university based on a personal information form (Selbstauskunftsbogen). Find further information in uni-assist’s FAQ for refugees.

Will I be able to pick up my studies from where I left off?

The easiest way to continue your studies will be to apply for the first semester and have the academic achievements you have already earned recognised during the first year after enrolment. For further counselling please contact the Student Advisory Service.
