POP contaminated soils

Monitoring and Mitigation of POP contaminated soils in the South Caucasus region

The BMBF-funded project supports partnerships for sustainable solutions in countries in transition and developing countries, e.g. partnerships for sustainable use of soil.

Soils in the South Caucasus region today are contaminated with persistent organic pollutants (POP) due to an intense use of pesticides in the past. Currently the use of pesticids is often lower, but due to their low degradability, POPs remain in the soil for a long time. If the contaminants are transferred in the food chain, this can lead to human health risks. The project focusses on capturing the contaminant situation of POP contaminated agricultural sites. New approaches for cooperation will be developed for sustainable soil protection. The scientific aim is to develop and apply a POP-screening method to capture the contaminant situation of a site and to establish a phytoremediation method for the sustainable remediation of contaminated soils in the South Caucasus region.

One of the tasks of Rhine-Waal university of Applied Sciences is the environmental assessment of the phytoremediation method.
