Fashion Revolution Week Day 4

The Fairtrade Textile Standard

The Fairtrade Textile Standard was introduced in 2016 and is a product label that guarantees fair conditions throughout the entire textile supply chain, from ginning to manufacturing.  The objective is to improve the living and working conditions of workers along the entire supply chain, as well as to fight poverty and enable participation. It is also about strengthening the bargaining position and guaranteeing a decent standard of living.

The Textile Standard is the only standard that defines a fixed time frame of six years within which workers must be paid a living wage. The benchmark for achieving this is the Global Living Wage Coalition, which is used to estimate the living wage of different regions. In addition, this approach includes fair purchasing conditions and long-term commitments between suppliers and companies.

This standard is not limited to Fairtrade cotton for further processing, but also includes other responsibly produced textile fibres, so-called "Responsible Fibres". The label transparently shows whether the cotton is Fairtrade or fair cultivated, as well as whether a company is still in the process or already paying the fair living wages.
