Students from the International Taxation and Law, B.A. program at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences once again had the opportunity this year to gain practical insights into current issues of international taxation. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. habil. Ute Merbecks, the group collaborated with Henkel on an interdisciplinary project featuring real-world business challenges.

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the students were welcomed at Henkel’s headquarters in Düsseldorf. The focus of the project day was a series of intensive workshops on three future-oriented topics:

  • Greening the Tax System
  • Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Tax
  • Transfer Pricing

These case studies offered the students an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to real business scenarios. The group work was conducted in mixed teams and supported by experts from Henkel’s tax department.

After the working phase, the students presented their results to a panel of experts made up of representatives from Henkel and the university. The presentations impressed with their technical depth, innovative approaches, and high level of professionalism – a clear testament to the successful link between theory and practice.

A particular highlight of the day was the visit to the Henkel Archive as part of the Heritage & History Tour. The students were given a unique look into the company’s history – from its early days of handwritten accounting to historical board meeting notes. This journey through time vividly illustrated Henkel’s rich tradition and its continuous capacity for renewal.

The program concluded with networking sessions: in discussions with Henkel employees, students learned about career prospects and entry opportunities at the company. Not only were specific job profiles introduced, but individual questions about internships, trainee programs, and professional development were also addressed.

This project once again highlights the value of close cooperation between academic education and industry practice – practical, future-oriented, and mutually inspiring.
