4th Nairobi-Kleve Model African Union on Climate Change
Referring to the COP27, the fourth Nairobi-Kleve Model African Union (NKMAU) from November 7-11, 2022 was dedicated to the topic of climate change. The conference was organized by four students under the direction of Katja Flockau, funded by the ASA program from Engagement Global in cooperation with the Riara University in Nairobi, Kenya.
Over four days, HSRW students discussed four main topics with students from Kenya in live sessions and asynchronously on the interactive learning platform Senaryon. They discussed immediate actions to tackle the Urban Heat Island effect in the "Public Service, Local Government, Urban Development and Decentralization" committee. The Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment Committee considered strategies and measures to prevent drought induced displacement in sub-Saharan Africa. The “Gender Equality and Women Empowerment” committee dedicated itself to the promotion and protection of women's rights in the context of the adverse effects of climate change. As part of the “Defense, Safety and Security” Committee, students discussed countering the rise in violent extremism caused by climate-related loss of livelihoods.
