Brassicaceae - Theme of the Year 2026
Summer 2026 will be the year of the crucifers.
Brassicaceae (crucifers) are a plant family within the order Brassicales.
It is a versatile plant family that is primarily known for its numerous cabbage varieties and ranks among the most important vegetable crops worldwide. Among others, it is the source of white cabbage, red cabbage, pointed cabbage, savoy cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, and kohlrabi, which have predominantly originated from wild cabbage. Cabbage is characterized by its high content of vitamins, dietary fiber, and minerals, making it a staple of a balanced diet.
In addition, radishes, daikon, arugula (rocket), mustard, and rapeseed also belong to the crucifers. Characteristic of the family are the four crosswise-arranged petals, which give it its German name ("Kreuzblütler" meaning cross-flower). Due to their robustness and adaptability, many species thrive in temperate climates and hold significant economic and horticultural importance in both commercial farming and home gardens.
The Brassicaceae family comprises about 370 genera with around 4,000 species. Within the family, there are numerous cultivated forms and breeds, especially among the cabbage varieties, which differ in growth habit, leaf structure, color, taste, and intended use.
