The “Certified Hygiene” Seal of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences

Hygiene is becoming an increasingly important tool in the prevention of infection and other adverse effects caused by microbes. Good hygiene often depends on effective household cleaning products and hygiene-oriented construction of household devices.

What is the seal ‘Certified Hygiene’?

To better identify quality products for consumers, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences has created a ‘Certified Hygiene’ seal that can be awarded to cleaning products and devices (dishwashers or washing machines) which demonstrate excellent hygienic performance or ensure an above-average hygienic standard due to their particular formulas or construction methods.

How do we test the performance?

The performance tests used for certification were developed by researchers at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, who modified standardised testing variants and guidelines for specific purposes. However, standardised test procedures are also used for certification purposes when they prove to be more appropriate for ascertaining the hygienic qualities of a particular product or device. All testing is conducted according to the principles of good scientific practice by qualified scientists at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.

Where useful and appropriate, testing scientists also incorporate the results of other experiments conducted at the university or independent third parties for the purposes of confirming and supporting new testing results. In order to be considered for use, however, ancillary results must have been clearly and demonstrably acequired according to the principles of scientific neutrality, objectivity and professionalism.

When is the seal awarded?

The "Certified Hygiene" Seal of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is awarded when a tested product or device exceeds all testing specifications. This is the case, in particular, when all minimum testing requirements were exceeded, when the household product/device exceeds particularly strict normative requirements from other areas (i.e. medical or commercial standards), or when additional data is available proving that a particular product or device exceeds testing requirements.

Who can use the seal ‘Certified Hygiene’?

The seal is of particular interest to manufacturers of household appliances, such as washing machines or dishwashers, but can also be applied to the testing of other appliances such as fully automatic coffee machines, air cleaners or similar.
